Advice that Stuck: Always Add Value We get bombarded with advice throughout our career. Even as you read this post, you are going to get some advice. Some advice is sage wisdom. Some is contrarian. Some is bad. But sometimes, there is a true diamond in the rough that passes the test of time. When I was doing tech support, my manager at the time offered this advice to me that has not only stuck, but became a personal mantra I’ve had through my career up to this point. â€Å"Always add value in everything you do† Adding value doesn’t necessarily require a huge production or a large amount of money. No matter what you value you add, make sure that what you do doesn’t have a hidden agenda. Behaviors that do not appear authentic will quickly be detected, and your reputation will tarnish. With that in mind, karma plays a huge role in value add. Further down, I will identify people as â€Å"customers†. This is not strictly for people who pay you money for a product or service. Customers can consist of coworkers who ask you to do work for them. In this case, they are asking for something and you get a wage for your efforts. For simplicity, people you do work for will be identified as customers. Why this advice is so important It justifies higher pay (with patience and strategic maneuvering) When people work, they expect you to do activities A, B, and C. They get paid for A, B, and C.
